How to Check if ChatGPT Cites Your Brand (Free 5-Minute Method)
Run these 5 prompts in ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Claude to see if your brand is mentioned, cited or absent.
When a prospect asks ChatGPT for the best tool in your category, does your brand appear? Most teams have no idea. Here's a five-minute method to find out — free, no tools required.
Why this matters more than your rankings
AI assistants are becoming the first stop in buying research. Being cited in an answer puts you in front of the buyer at the exact moment of recommendation — and being absent hands that moment to a competitor. But unlike rankings, you can't see AI citations in Search Console. You have to test.
The 5-prompt test
Run these five prompts in ChatGPT (and repeat in Perplexity, Gemini and Claude):
- Recommendation: "What's the best [your category] for [your core buyer]?"
- Best-fit: "Which [category] is best for [specific use case]?"
- Comparison: "Compare [you] vs [your best-known competitor]."
- How-to: "How do I [the job your product does]?"
- Feature: "What [category] tools support [key feature]?"
Score each answer: Mentioned (named, no link), Cited (named with a source link), or Absent.
Read the answers like an auditor
- Absent everywhere: a visibility problem — check AI crawler access and your content first.
- Mentioned but not cited: you're known but not the source. Publish answer-first content with clear, quotable facts.
- Cited with wrong facts: your content is retrievable but ambiguous. Tighten the statements the engines quote.
- Always note which competitors appear — that's your share-of-voice baseline.
Make it repeatable
Run the same five prompts monthly, same wording, and log the results. Single checks tell you nothing; the trend is what matters — and engines change fast.
The limits of manual testing
Five prompts, four engines, monthly runs: doable. But manual testing can't cover your full buying space (the serious set is 50-200 prompts), doesn't handle variations by persona or location, and gives you no history or alerts. That's what automated AI visibility tracking does: AEO Pulse Labs runs your prompt set across all four engines on a schedule, scores mention vs citation vs absent, and tracks competitors alongside you. Start with the free plan — or grade your site's AI-readiness first in 60 seconds.
